Katy Schutte (she/her) is an award-winning writer, improviser and teaching artist with a special interest in folklore.
Katy has performed and taught improvisation in thirty-something countries across five continents. She is a Head Teacher and Curriculum Writer for Hoopla, the UK’s biggest improv school and recently joined the Arvon creative writing teaching team. Katy authored The Improviser's Way: A Longform Workbook, published by Nick Hern Books. She was one of The Maydays from 2004-2022, is half of sci-fi improv duo Project2 and performs with Yes Queens, Track 96, Brand New Musical and Hell Yeah! among others. She was an artist in residence for The Arctic Circle Project in 2022 and her cosmic horror play The Ice at the End of the World premiered at Omnibus Theatre for three weeks in 2024.
Katy directs for the Hoopla main stage and tours hopepunk comedy and science climate change show We Built this City on Rock and Coal around the island of Ireland.
Katy won multiple writing awards in 2022 for her screenplay and web series pilot. She is a finalist and winner of the Brighton Festival Fringe Best Comedy Show award, Katy also stars in BAFTA winning online educational series History Bombs. She was recently longlisted for the Women in Theatre Lab.
Katy makes solo work including Schutte the Unromantic and acclaimed semi-immersive folk horror play Let's Summon Demons. She is a contributing writer for Cards Against Humanity and actor/writer on web series Sideliners. She was resident singer/songwriter on Sean and Robot’s Comedy Circuit podcast and co-creator/improviser for Dead British on Union Jack Radio. She is co-writer/dramaturg on AR immersive game Beth's Legacy in association with StoryFutures and CreativeXR and writer/improv director/performer on multi-platform live virtual reality shows The Galaxicle Implosions, Play Test and House of Masks with FANDCO and Flipside.
Katy is also a radio, commercial and voiceover actor. She is studying an MA in Folklore Studies at the University of Hertfordshire.
